Everybody still paying attention in the appeals of the Tim festival and one of the shows more expected and commented was Bjork´s. Ok. She can be super cool but the motive of my article here will not be her, but the singer´s husband: Matthew Barney. As expected of an artist in the century XXI, Barney is multi: does film, videos, installations, sculptures, photographs, illustrations and performances - comes being described as main heir of the perform art of the years 60 and 70. He, however, prefers to title himself as a sculptor and is not aimlessly that the metaphysical hypertrophy and the physical limits of the human body are constant inspirations of his work. As the Greeks, Barney studies meticulously the body and portrays fantastic creatures, as the woman-cat and the man-goat. It represents the mythology of the new millennium based in the construction of opposite ideas that melts in a unit of the (apparently) impossible. For him, the human body would be so much an instrument for sculptures as a reproductive organ. So, his more notorious work was the exposition CYCLE CREMASTER – thin muscle that raises the testicles, expert as symbol of the male sexuality. In the sample were united drawings, sculptures, pictures, objects and projection of 5 films about the subject. The videos apparently does not have plot but has clear prominent points about the studies of the artist. One of the videos happens in the Isle of Man, famous by the car running. Images by car in opposite directions and super-muscular fairies, represents the tension between the man and the machine. Maria Teresa Santoro concluded "Cremaster 4 summarizes the metaphor of the bipolar forces, exemplified in the descending, ascending, and opposite running, in the contrast between body and machine and his forces, united, in the end of the odysseys of the man and of the machine, in a third composed one of the two poles: a creative form that conjugates the symmetry of a real impossible one." It represents the beginning of the life, in the film recorded in the stadium of soccer of Coarse (where did his pass infancy) where grapes formed diagrams of the female reproductive organs and male about the uterine figure stamped in the field. The life begins and finishes in the organ. And, the end, seen under the female look, is present in another film recorded in Budapest when shows the suffering of Queen of Chain in style Elizabeth’s period when dies his loved, the magical one Harry Houdini. Barney explains the trial of creation: "Everything began from the choice the 5 places that joined would form an only body. I was to those places and begin it write stories of creatures regarding the those rentals. Other figures arose of mine own lie from the conception of sculptural bodies that needed a host." Another outstanding work was the film Drawing Restrait 9, in which Bjork acts and collaborates with the soundtrack. This was enough criticized by give a superficial handling to the Japanese culture and by the action "disastrous". Another critic is going to be "a film without foundation about the culture oriental kitsch that transforms Memories of a geisha in an ethnographic documentary".
As all avant-garde artists, Matthew Barney is loved by some and hated by others: Michael Kimmelman, criticizer of the New York Teams, described him as "the most important American artist of its generation." The own artist confesses that does film without a complete script. His express art barely the way as he observes the things without have necessarily a conscience of everything. So, people try to understand him when the artist is just throwing feeling… Anyway, I finish that article answering Bucky in the film Black Dahlia: - Sometimes I don´t get modern art. I would say: -Why do we need get? Just feel it! |
